Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck Team Up Again At Madison Square Garden

The second night of Eric Clapton’s and Jeff Beck’s two night stand at Madison Square Garden took place on Friday 19 February 2010. The show was again split into three parts – a solo set by Jeff, a solo set by Eric, then a set together with Eric’s band. Their joint set was again full of the classic blues they both love … "Shake Your Moneymaker," "You Need Love," "Outside Woman Blues," "Little Brown Bird," and "Wee Wee Baby." Also included in the set was Sly and The Family Stone’s "I Want To Take You Higher" and "Moon River." "Moon River" was an interesting choice – and an audience favorite judging by the amount of applause it garnered – as it showed off Clapton’s vocal chops as well as the more lyrical side of Jeff’s playing. They closed the night with "Crossroads".
Jeff’s solo set, which began a few minutes after 8PM, featured a mix of old and new material. Starting off with "Eternity’s Breath" and "Stratus," it also included the Beck classics, "Led Boots" (from his album Wired) and the bluesy "Big Block" (from Guitar Shop). Jeff again ended his portion of the show with his take on the Puccini aria, "Nessun Dorma".
Eric’s ten song solo set began with a few acoustic numbers, including "unplugged" takes on "Running On Faith" and "I’ve Got A Rock N Roll Heart," which has recently seen a resurgence in popularity as it’s featured in a U.S. television commercial for T-Mobile. One concert goer told Where’s Eric! that "I’m a guitar player myself and the acoustic songs were probably my favorite part of the concert. It was hard for me to take in because his acoustic playing is so far above what he did on Unplugged – his dexterity is amazing. EC’s getting better and better."
When Eric did plug in, he started off deep in the back catalogue with songs performed during the Derek and The Dominos era: "Tell The Truth" and "Key To The Highway." "I Shot The Sheriff," followed and allowed ample time for soloing. The Robert Johnson blues, "Little Queen of Spades," followed by "Cocaine" rounded out Eric’s set.
Next on the itinerary for Jeff and Eric is Toronto’s Air Canada Centre on 21 February. Their four city mini tour wraps on 22 February at Montreal’s Bell Centre. Jeff will again be part of the lineup for Eric’s upcoming Crossroads Guitar Festival on 26 June.
