Eric Clapton XI vs The Bunburys: Charity Cricket Match Takes Place 8 June in Cranleigh, Surrey

The Governors of Longacre School have announced that Eric Clapton will be fielding a team of friends against The Bunburys in support of The Longacre Jubilee Appeal, CHASE Children’s Hospice in Guildford, Crossroads Centre – the rehabilitation centre in Antigua founded by Eric Clapton, and the English Schools Cricket Association. The charity cricket match will take place on Sunday 8 June 2008 at 2:30PM at Cranleigh School, Cranleigh, Surrey. The match aims to raise signficant funds for all of these organisations.

A provisional teams list includes Eric Clapton, Bill Wyman, Roger Waters, Mike Rutherford, Mark Austin ITN, John Inverdale BBC Sport, Frazer Hines of Emmerdale, former Rugby player and cricketer Liam Botham, Surrey and England players Mark Butcher and Mark Ramprakash, Surrey players Jonathan Batty and James Benning and Former England players Phil Tuffnell, Jack Russell and Alan Lamb.

An added element of fun for the day will be the Nets Session with a professional. Fifteen minute batting or bowling coaching sessions in the nets during the afternoon will be available with Alex Louden (ex Kent and Warwickshire) and James Bruce (ex Hampshire). Available to anyone aged 10 and over at a cost of 10 GBP per 15 minutes (maximum 30 minutes). Please bring your own equipment including cricket gloves and box!

Eric Clapton was introduced to the sport by Dr. David English, former president of RSO Records and founder of the Bunbury charity cricket team in the 1980s. He joined the first Bunbury side in a match played at Ripley Court School in 1986. Since then, the every-changing celebrity team has raised more than 10 million pounds for various charities. In the ensuing years, Eric would occasionally take part in matches in the greater London area.

Eric last played in a celebrity cricket match on 10 August 2003 against the Alec Stewart Bunbury XI at Ripley Court School in Surrey. The final score was Bunbury XI 305 for 6 against the Eric Clapton XI 304 for 12. He labored long and hard for his all-time best of 13. The day was also England’s hottest day on record.

All tickets must be purchased in advance from Longacre School Office. No entry without a valid ticket. In the event of curtailment of cancellation of play, it is regretted that no refund of money can be made.
