For more than three decades, Nathan East has been called upon to perform on hit songs for many of the world’s greatest musicians including Grammy wininng Record Of The Year, “Get Lucky” by Daft Punk. If you attended an Eric Clapton Concert or listened to one of his albums between the years of 1986 and 2004 or heard one of his chart-topping singles like “Tears In Heaven” or “Change The World,” you’ve heard Nathan hold down the bass line. Or Michael Jackson’s “Bad”, Beyoncé’s “Listen” or Whitney Houston’s “Greatest Love Of All”. Next month, Yamaha Entertainment Group will release the bassist’s long awaited solo debut, “Nathan East”. The first single, “Daft Funk,” was released to radio the week of January 27.

Nathan was born in Philadelphia and raised in California. First studying cello, he switched to bass at age 14 and was part of his school’s jazz ensemble, marching band, choir, chorus and pep band. He also played in local Top 40-style bands in high school and college. Nathan’s breakthrough came when his band, Power, were hired as the house band for a Stax revue and came to the attention of Barry White. White hired the entire band for a national tour. White continued to use Nathan on recording sessions in Los Angeles. By the early 80s, Nathan’s sight-reading and diverse musical abilities helped grow his reputation and he established himself as one of the most in-demand session players on the West Coast.

Over the course of his three decade career, Nathan has worked with Anita Baker, Elton John, Phil Collins, Quincy Jones, Al Jarreau, Kenny Loggins, Lionel Ritchie, Roxy Music, Savage Garden, Madonna, The Bee Gees, Barbra Streisand, Celine Dione, Sergio Mendes, Andrea Bocelli, Josh Groban and Kenneth “Babyface” Edmonds, to name just a few. He is also a founding member of the contemporary jazz ensemble, Fourplay. Music from their 12 studio albums is a mainstay on jazz stations around the world.

Nathan’s solo debut was produced by Chris Gero and Nathan and engineered by Bryan Lenox. The 13 track disc is a mix of instrumental and vocal compositions showcasing Nathan’s melodic 5-string bass work. Guests include Eric Clapton, Sara Bareilles, Ray Parker, Jr., Michael McDonald, Nathan’s Fourplay collaborators, Bob James and Chuck Loeb, and Nathan’s 13-year-old son, Noah on piano.

His long-list of awards include a U.S. Congressional Record bestowed for his significant contribution to American music,an  ASCAP Award for songwriting, an Ivor Novello Award for songwriting, and was named NARAS “Most Valuable Player” Award as a bassist for four consecutive years.
