Turn Up From Home Episode 5 Premieres 20 June

Episode 5 Features Performances from Nathan and Noah East, Amelia and Dirk Powell, Rainy Eyes and Sonny Emory.
Turn up for Recovery is a charitable movement raising awareness of abstinence-based recovery, tackling the stigma of addiction and helping make treatment affordable to people struggling with alcohol and drug addiction. Founded by Melia Clapton, she announced the movement during Eric Clapton’s 2019 Crossroads Guitar Festival. The Turn Up From Home concert series is the organization’s newest initiative and was launched in response to the Coronavirus Pandemic.
On Saturday 20 June at PDT 11:00am, EDT 2:00pm and BST 7:00pm, Episode 5 of Turn Up From Home will debut on TUFR’s YouTube Channel. The episode features Amelia and Dirk Powell with Rainy Eyes, Noah and Nathan East, and Sonny Emory.

ABOUT THE MUSICIANS IN TURN UP FROM HOME EPISODE 5:
Nathan East was born in Philadelphia but his family relocated to San Diego when he was four. Nathan’s musical education began in seventh grade when he began studying cello. At 14, he switched to bass. A founding member of the chart-topping contemporary jazz group Fourplay, was 16 years old when he got his first break and found himself on the road with Barry White. The next time the phone rang, Quincy Jones was on the line. The calls kept coming and for more than forty years, Nathan has been churning out hit songs with artists as legendary as Eric Clapton, George Harrison, Michael Jackson, Phil Collins, Whitney Houston, Beyoncé, Barbra Streisand and Stevie Wonder. Called “the busiest bass player on the planet” and “the most famous person you don’t know you already know,” he has more than 2,000 recordings under his belt. He released his self-titled debut in 2014 and followed it up with Reverence in 2017. Nathan has performed with Eric at the 2004 and 2019 Crossroads Guitar Festivals plus the 1999 Crossroads Concert at Madison Square Garden.
Noah East began playing the piano at the age of four when his parents discovered that he had perfect pitch. At age 13, he recorded an arrangement of the Beatles classic, “Yesterday” on Nathan East’s Grammy Nominated debut album. Noah’s performance was a featured piano & bass duet with his father. He was also featured on his second album, “Reverence” for the Yamaha Entertainment Group record label. Since then, he has performed at the USC Thorton School of Music Performance for the Popular Music Forum and at the 18th Annual Lytle Benefit Concert at UCSD with Nathan. Noah and his father have performed together at multiple music venues around the world including the Kawasaki Jazz Festival in Japan and the legendary Tokyo Blue Note Jazz Club. Noah is currently a student at UC Berkeley studying Business Administration.
Sonny Emory is a native of Atlanta and rceived his first drum set at the age of four. After graduating from Georgia State University with a bachelor’s degree in Jazz and Classical Performance, Sonny embarked on his professional career playing with Joe Sample and The Crusaders. A former member of Earth, Wind & Fire, he has also worked with Steely Dan, Bruce Hornsby, Stanley Clarke, Bette Midler, Al Jarreau, Jean-Luc Ponty, the B-52s, Jennifer Lopez, Spyro Gyra and Boz Scaggs to name a few. Sonny first worked with Eric Clapton, David Sanborn and Michael Kamen on the Lethal Weapon 2 soundtrack in 1989. In 2013, EC was featured on the track Truth’ll Set U Free on Sonny’s album, Rock Hard Cachet. Sonny toured with EC in 2018 / 2019 and performed at last year’s Crossroads Guitar Festival.
Dirk Powell is a musician with deep roots in several rural American styles, particularly Appalachian and Cajun music. He learned banjo and fiddle from his grandfather in Kentucky and has a longstanding connection to Louisiana, where he has lived since the early 1990s. He has performed and recorded with musicians such as Joan Baez, Jack White, Loretta Lynn, and Levon Helm, and contributed to films such as “Cold Mountain” and “In the Electric Mist.” Dirk’s original songs and records have had an international impact. He performs regularly on fiddle, button accordion, banjo, guitar, mandolin, and piano, while singing a soulful mix of original and traditional songs. Dirk toured with Eric Clapton in 2016 and was featured on Eric’s album, “I Still Do.”
Amelia Powell, like her father, Dirk Powell, has deep musical roots on both sides of the family. Her grandfather Dewey Balfa, along with her great-uncles the Balfa Brothers, were essential in bringing Cajun music to international awareness in the 1960s and 70s. That soulfulness and depth is present in her music. Despite still being in her teens, Amelia has appeared in films such as “Behold the Earth” and been featured on television performing traditional music in the US, Ireland, and Scotland. She has recorded and performed with MacArthur “genius grant” recipient Rhiannon Giddens and been part of many award-winning projects.
Rainy Eyes is a Norwegian-born singer-songwriter whose unique, soulful sound can best be described as Dreamy Folk Americana. She spent the last decade in the San Francisco Bay Area but now resides in the culturally fertile ground of Lafayette, Louisiana. Irena has toured internationally and recorded with artists such as Peter Rowan, Willie Watson, and Dirk Powell. Her award-winning music program for children, Little Folkies, which features over 70 original songs and direct hands-on teaching for children, is expanding to an international online platform in the current climate. Irena brings an honesty and direct intention to her music that resonates with audiences around the globe.
