British Rock Legends Eric Clapton & Jeff Beck Rock Saitama Super Arena Again!

Eric Clapton and Jeff Beck co-headlined the second and last of their two shows together at the Saitama Super Arena in Japan on Sunday 22 February 2009. Like the first evening, Jeff Beck and his band opened the concert. Added to his set was "Big Block" and "Where Were You". "Blue Wind" was dropped for this performance from Beck’s set list. One fan has checked in with Where’s Eric! and noted that the song called "Solo instrumental by Jeff Beck with Tal Wilkenfeld" should be more properly called "Solo Instrumental by Tal Wilkenfeld with Jeff Beck." He wrote, "Tal starts it off while Jeff sneaks around behind her like a naughty schoolboy and plays the bass E string on the first 5 or 6 frets whilst she is soloing higher up the fret board on the other strings." So, the set list has been updated accordingly for both evenings!

For his set, EC changed some songs around. Back in were radio perennials "Wonderful Tonight" and "I Shot The Sheriff" along with the blues standard "Key To The Highway". It has also been noted that EC performed "Driftin’" in different styles over the two nights.

The EC / Jeff set did not change and Jeff again joined EC and his band for those songs. Early reports from the venue indicate that Jeff Beck again turned in a strong performance and that EC played more aggressively than the previous day. Jeff played his trademark runs under and even along with EC’s vocals. Although Jeff totaled up more lead breaks than EC, EC’s when they came were inspired. The material in their joint set is fresh and enjoyable with complex arrangements.

Again, being a weekend show, it began promptly at 5PM. For those who have not been following the news from the Winter Tour, Eric’s band features Doyle Bramhall II (guitars / vocals), Chris Stainton (keyboards), Willie Weeks (bass), Abe Laboriel Jr. (drums), Sharon White (backing vocals) and Michelle John (backing vocals).

According to fans in the audience, the shows with Jeff Beck were not filmed for broadcast. EC’s upcoming solo show at the Budokan on 25 February will be filmed by WOWOW Television for broadcast in March within Japan.
