Eric Clapton Featured In 9/11 Documentary “The Love We Make”

Showtime, the U.S. cable television network, will premiere the documentary, The Love We Make, on 10 September. The film follows Paul McCartney as he puts together The Concert for New York in the month after the 9/11 attacks. Directed by Albert Maysles and Bradley Kapplan, it was shot in 16mm black and white. McCartney is seen interacting with New Yorkers on the Manhattan streets as he rehearses for the concert, and other concert performers, including cameos by David Bowie, Leonardo DiCaprio, Bill Clinton, Eric Clapton, Sheryl Crow Mick Jagger and more.

McCartney himself was scheduled to fly out of New York City on the morning of September 11, and upon being grounded returned to the city to witness the unfolding situation firsthand. He said of the project, "Music is magical. It has some property that really can be very healing. Someday we’ll probably understand more about it, but the ‘how’ doesn’t really matter, because we know that power exists."

Following the attack, Paul said, "The world, America and especially New York had a sense of vulnerability I had never seen there before." It reminded him, he said, of how his parents and other adults would talk about the wartime German bombings in his Liverpool hometown – and how music was one of the things that helped. That sparked his own idea for a New York concert, he said and eventually he teamed with MTV, Harvey Weinstein and others to produce it. He said the audience on the night of the concert (20 October 2001) still had that sense of vulnerability. But by then, he said, he could feel some of the shock wearing off. "I think people were ready to stop holding it in and let some of their emotions go," he said. "You could especially see it that night with the emergency workers and firefighters."
