Eric Clapton & Jeff Beck 2010 Tour: A Look Back

Check Out Videos, Set Lists And Fan Reviews From Their Historic 2010 Tour

It’s been 10 years since Eric Clapton and Jeff Beck launched their six-night co-headlining tour at The O2 on 13 February 2010.

At the dawn of their careers, both guitarists spent time in The Yardbirds, one of the key bands in Britain’s 1960s blues revival. Jeff took over on guitar when Eric departed in March 1965 when the band moved towards a more commercial pop sound contrary to Eric’s blues roots.

It took them until September 1981 to join forces on stage. That first team-up happened at a series of benefit concerts for Amnesty International at the Theatre Royal, London. At two of the three “The Secret Policeman’s Other Ball” performances, Eric and Jeff played “Crossroads,” “Further On Up The Road,” and “Cause We’ve Ended As Lovers.” Two years later, in September 1983, they were on stage at the Royal Albert Hall for the ARMS and Princes’ Trust shows, with fellow Yardbirds alum, Jimmy Page. But, it would be another 21 years before they thrilled audiences again. On June 6, 2004 Jeff joined Eric for an exhilerating performance of “Cause We’ve Ended As Lovers” at Eric’s Crossroads Guitar Festival in Dallas, Texas. Then, in November 2007, Eric joined Jeff during onenight during Jeff’s concert series at Ronnie Scott’s in London. Two years later, the guitarists shared a double bill at Saitama Super Arena in Japan on 21 and 22 February 2009. Those two shows became the impetus for the 2010 mini-tour.

Eric and Jeff kicked off their 2010 appearances with two nights in London, followed by two nights at New York’s Madison Square Garden, and one-night in Toronto and Montreal. Jeff and his band opened each performance. His solo set showcased his flashier style, enhanced with the addition of an orchestra and guest vocalists at the London gigs. Eric’s set was broken into two parts – acoustic and electric – and highlighted his emotive blues style.  Backed by his regular touring band, Eric stamped each song with his trademark solos. The two greats finally joined together in the third set where they traded leads on every song. With each number, Eric and Jeff raised the bar and demonstrated how their unique styles dovetail. Songs like “Shake Your Money Maker,” “You Need Love,” “Wee Wee Baby,” “Outside Woman Blues” and “(I Want To Take You) Higher” thrilled audiences at each stop on the tour. The guitarists even departed from their more usual canons to present a stunning take on the standard, “Moon River.” All in all, Eric’s and Jeff’s different styles produced a series of dynamic evenings of musical virtuosity that have not been forgotten by those who attended.
