Rotterdam Concert Report: 11 April 2004

Eric Clapton’s jaunt around Europe continued with a stop at the Ahoy in Rotterdam. Robert Randolph and the Family Band opened. Fans had this to say about the show:

It was my fifth EC concert.( I am a fan since the early 70 ‘s) and although he plays often the same numbers (like Layla, cocaine, sunshine of your love, wonderful tonight etc. etc.) , it always sounds different! What a great guitar magician EC is. The band was ok, Doyle Bramhall was a good stand in for Andy Fairweather Low. I enjoyed the show and I hope to see Eric again the next following years (and if possible in Ahoy again). He is to good to quit! In my opinion Eric is on his best when he plays the blues! ( KHW, HYELAW, WYGAGF,IWLG., MCB) And his voice is like wine, according as Eric gets older, his voice becomes better!! By the way, the warming up ( R.Randolph ) was too heavy.

I’ve been a fan since the 60’s… saw Clapton at the Ahoy Rotterdam and all I can say is he gave a great show, struck me that he really felt the need to burn. He played a great many solos, acoustic guitar only showed up occasionally. Once and a while, I even got some rare flashbacks to the Cream period. As far as I’m concerned he hasn’t lost his touch, still gave me goosebumps and he’s still a hell of a guitar player.

I saw Eric and his band tonight at Ahoy in Rotterdam. The setlist was the same as in Antwerpen, seems to me a bit on the automatic pilot. This is my second time I saw him and the first time in 2001 blew me away.

Eric played most of the set on the crash III guitar. The sound was good, Eric played the whole set on his Cornwel amp. Eric was wearing a blue shirt and white shoes, everybody played well and Doyle fitted in perfectly. He had a great bluesy sound.

Solos were very nice (I shot the sheriff and Got to get better were to me the highlights of the show). Eric’s voice was great just like always. Sunshine of your love still sounds great after so many years, it’s amazing. Great evening with a great band!

The complete set list in Rotterdam was:

  1. Let It Rain
  2. Hoochie Coochie Man
  3. Bell Bottom Blues
  4. I Shot The Sheriff
  5. Milkcow’s Calf Blues
  6. When You Got A Good Friend
  7. They’re Red Hot
  8. Kind Hearted Woman
  9. Got To Get Better In A Little While
  10. I Wanna Little Girl
  11. Change The World
  12. Have You Ever Loved A Woman
  13. Badge
  14. Wonderful Tonight
  15. Layla
  16. Cocaine
  17. Sunshine Of Your Love (encore with Robert Randolph)
  18. I Got My Mojo Workin’ (encore with Robert Randolph)
